A recent study indicates that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
